Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Grave stele. Marble. Found in Sparta. The stele is divided vertically into two parts. The inscription is carved at the left, stating that Marcus Aurelius Alexys took part in a campaign, against the Persians. This will have been the Parthian campaign (A.D. 214-217) of the emperor Caracalla, in which two companies of Spartans, the Laconian and the Pitanatan, took part. The recessed panel at the right contains the relief figure of the dead man. The warrior wears a chiton, a cloak and the lorica segmentata, the most common type of corselet worn by Roman legionaries. On his head he wears a Laconian pilos. The heavy club held in his left hand is an unusual weapon for a soldier. Inventory number: 1290. National Archaeological Museum of Athens. Athens, Greece. Text: Museum inscription.
