He was appointed a lieutenant inthe Kentucky militia in 1808, and in 1811 he was made a captain,and Sept. i, 1813, Governor Isaac Shelby appointed him a regi-mental ensign. He served as such in the War of 1812, on theNorthern Lakes with General Harrison, in the Eleventh regimentunder Colonel Williams, and took part in the battle of the Thames, where the great victory was won, and the KentuckyVolunteers avenged the massacre of the River Raisin. In 1816, desirous of new adventure and new opportunity, hecollected his personal property, consisting of some live stock anda few negro slaves, and started, with his family of wife andfour children, for the new Territory of Missouri. He spent oneyear in St. Louis Co., and then pressed forward to the newcenter of population and influence being formed at Franklin,on the western frontier, in the Boones Lick country. General Richard Gentry NICHOLAS GENTRY AND HIS DESCENDANTS 95 to become prominent throughout the state and the great west.He was one of the speakers at the banquet given to the officersof the Independence, the first steamboat to ascend the MissouriRiver, which arrived at FrankHn May 28, 1819. In 1820 he was one of the incorporators of the town of Co-lumbia, and built the first house and moved his family there, anddevoted himself towards building up the town. He was always deeply interested in public affairs, and espe-cially in the military organizations of the state. In 1821 he was appointed captain by the governor, and in1822 a colonel in the State Militia. About this time he and hisbrother James became interested in the lead mines of Galena,111., and his brother remained there until he died.
