It is in such a seasonas the present that this interesting 6peeiesgets its opportunity to flower, owing to the fact The species is not common in gardens ; a plantflowered in the Cape House, Royal Gardens,Kew, in 1900 ; whilst specimens flowered in theopen in 1909, both in Mr. Gumbletons gardenat Belgrove. The generalappreciation the plant receives may be partlydue to the infrequeney that it is seen at its best;but, in any case, the group of plants at Kewhas attracted more attention lecently than any-thing else in the gardens. The species was in-troduced from the mountains of Natal, where itgrows at an elevation of 5,000 to 6,000 feetabove the sea-level. It is interesting as be-longing to a small section of Kniphofias whichhave the individual flowers erect. unusual for the plant to flower at this period,and in some seasons we have had several spikesat Christmas; Kniphofia Saundersii is very simi-lar to K. aloides in general characters, but theflower stems are not quite so rigid, which is animprovement for gardens.
