iver Tow, some fifteen miles north-west ofChone. Leaving the red sandstone hills behind, thetrail ran into country of very different forma-tion. Rocky ravines gave place to undulatinggrassy land; and herds of cattle, tended by anomadic population whose homes are low, blacktents, became features of the landscape. Hereand there in this district a few houses, with a resembling those of Hamamelis, and bids fail-to become a useful subject. My original intention was to visit the famouslamasery at Labrang, where it is said that threethousand priests reside, but owing to official inter-ference this route had to be changed to one in asoutherly direction which came out on the higherreaches of the Tow River. The scenery throughwhich the river flows at this point is magni-ficent, the gra6S country now giving way tothickly wooded, rocks and gorges, while in thewinding bends of the river pretty villages appear,each with its rustic cantilever bridge. This rolling typeof country is said to stretch away west to Paoanand Kweite near the Yellow River. The ab-sence of trees and shrubs leaves the countryexposed to winds, and owing to the absence ofwood fuel the people resort to dried animal dungfor fires. Showy herbaceous plant6 are also scarce onthis grassy plateau, although there were quite anumber of species of Senecio. One species i Xo.710) is quite distinct.
