The flowers were step some fresh source of interest was aroused, andit was surprising to find so many plants thrivingwithin the limits of the wild garden, the soil ofwhich consists of light sandy loam and abundanceof leaf-mould. The loam gives evidence of thepresence of iron, and to this I attribute theunusual intensity of colour in Prunus Pissardi.Berberis stenophylla, Pyrus floribunda, and otherflowering trees and shruljs. The double-blossomedCherries and Plums were very beautiful and ingreat variety. Those sent from Japan some CHINA ASTERS. The illustr.ation at fig. 115 has been reproducedfrom a photograph taken in the seed trial groundsof Messrs. Webb & Sons, at Kinver, Staffordshire.The bed in the foreground of the picture consistsof varieties of the type known as Victoria, whichhas large, finely-formed flowers composed of im-bricating segments. The type is obtainable inmany shades and hues, or in distinct colours,and is among the most excellent Asters for usein flower-beds.
