. And yet possibly few landscapegardeners would regret indiscriminate raids onbracken more than Mr. Simpson, surrounded, almost the roots early in April, will kill the major part ofthem. But it cannot be needful to wage a war ofdecimation, to say nothing of extermination, againstbracken. Mr. Simpsons spark-guards on funnelswould prevent the firing of bracken and other crops,timber-yards, &e. The beating back of such cropsfrom the sides of the line would also do much in thesame direction. The early cutting or harvesting ofbracken would reduce the risk of fire to nil, forbracken is by no means inflammable till dead ripe.Cutting the crop before this stage of perfect maturitywould also improve its fibre for paper-making, andpossibly for other trade purposes, as well as greatlyimprove bracken for the bedding of live-stock, andthe protection of fruit-blossoms, Roses, &c.
