One of the greatest mis-takes in the culture of the Christmas Ro3e is thatof attempting to move, or rather transplant, one ofthese big specimens intact, for the simple reasonthat the long roots refuse to give off fibres, the resultbeing the rapid decline of the plant. Frequently thedesire has been expressed to transplant a verylarge example in this way, but in each case I havorecited a noted failure of my own with one such plant,and though special soil to a depth of \\ feet was given,and the plant was only a few minutes in beiug trans-ferred to its new home, the whole thing was a hope-less failure. (January 9, 1S97 had lost every leaf, and the great head of bloom re-fused to rise as usual, the plant was lifted audexamined, only to find a mass of rotten and decayingroots where health and vigour were a few weeksbefore. When these planis are well established they mayremain for years in the same spot, content with agood mulching of manure as soon as the flowering isover ; this will assist in keeping them cool duringsummer, and prevent the association of manure withtheir beautiful flowers. Then as to the time ofplanting, there are differences of opinion, as may beexpected ; but any who have made a study of themanner and time the new roots are produced by thisplant will be alive to the importance attaching toplanting in early autumn ; while the need for thiswould appear greater for the southern than for thenorthern counties.
