ay. It is a ques-tion of warmth, together with efficient ventilation—not an easy matter in the spring, with the ordinaryhot-bed. Most gardeners know how to prepare the materialsfor making a hot-bed, and they are aware that thecareful preparation of the loaves and stable manure isa matter of importance. If the stable-manure ismuch used before it reaches the gardener, less of itshould be used than if it be only stained-say one-third to two-thirdB of tree leaves ; and in the latter April 10, 189?. A hot-bedshould not be less than 3 feet 6 inches deep at thefront, or 4 feet at the back ; and if it can be made ina trench sufficiently wide to accommodate the bedand its linings, the heat will be proportionately with a large proportion of the long straw towards theoutside of it, place the frames thereon, and wait tillthe heat rises and the rank ammonia fumes havepassed off, by which time the heat will have declinedsomewhat.
