Text Appearing Before Image:
dge, a decided improvement, by which the older andlong-favoured Alarm is superseded. Madame Car-valho, a good white sort, was just opening ; and therewere others in abundance coming forward to keep upthe display. M. branches were not visible until after the January hoarfrosts, and chiefly after the sap had begun to flow ;whilst it is further evidenced that the damage was ofrecent origin, in the fact that many branches put forthleaves and bloom, and only collapsed when the rotinduced by the frost injuries spread through the wood. All the trees in question are growing on a south-westslope, the soil beneath being elevated into 6 feetrounded beds, on which are planted Gooseberrybushes and Violets, that all excessive surface-watercan get off quickly, and that the soil is naturally welldrained and by no means waterlogged. On the higherportion there is a considerable substratum of gravel, and here the damage is just as great as lower down, where the soil is stiffer and has an admixture of clay.

Ingersoll, adistinct sort, of fine habit, with bright rosy-scarletflowers, having a well-marked green blotch, whichrenders it very attractive. Other fine sorts in good ^0iite Ol^0mspnkm. Dead Apple Trees.—C. L.s note upon thistopic (p. 724) does not give a satisfactory reason forthe severe injuries to the many Apple trees I recentlymen
