It is when fruit is plentiful—when thetrees are heavy laden, and a dry time permits of the Nature is active. In the hope that the trees willbring forth this year a big crop, it will be well ifhousewives will get ready the jam-pots, and preparefor a busy preserving season. •—- Oroiius ai.pestris.—This species, which isa near ally of O. vernus, is now in company with thelatter, and several of its varieties, flowering at Kew.O. alpestris, a native of Hungary, has narrow leafletsand purplish-red flowers, and is a more slender plantthan the much commoner O. vernus. A very strikingvariety of the last named is cyaneus, which bears aprofusion of metallic blue blossoms ; albus is a formwith fine creamy-white flowers, and O. flore-pleno is adouble one, white suffused with red.
