t of apple culture. Fortu-nately the variety is neither scarce nor dear. Its merits are well-known, and indeed they areso conspicuous that, in common with other goodthings, it is always speaking for itself, and henceit is everywhere largely propagated and exten-sively planted, and is on the way to take thelead in the apple garden, and prove to all thatour declaration in its favor is warranted by thefacts. It is one of the best paying Apples inKent, and it is one of the few that may be trustedfor a crop in those damp alluvial valleys or bot-toms, where Spring frosts make the most havoc, and fruit growing is a precarious business. THE RELIANCE RASPBERRY. 1877.) A ND EOR TIG UL T URIS T. 303 Seedling Raspberry which seemed to have somegood points, and received therefor, commenda-tion in the Centennial weekly reports. It is some-what like the Philadelphia. There have beenmany raised of this character, but none so farhave equalled their parent. The full value ofthis variety can only be known by seeing it as itgrows in the field or garden, and what it is reallyworth will have to be spoken of in that connect-ion. But so far as any one can judge from thefruit, it will probably be a good competi-tor with that well-known variety. For theillustration we are indebted to Messrs. Gibson &Bennett, of Woodbury, N. J. Tea in California.—The newspapers are try-ing to induce attempts at Tea culture in Califor-nia. It is found by experience that Asiatic treesdo not do so well on the Pacific as on the Atlan-tic coast of our country. It does very well in theolder Southern States, but they cannot competewith low Chinese labor
