Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe Friary Francis Street - geograph.org.uk - 1194367.jpg |
English: The Friary Francis Street The Friary is now used by Sheppard Day Ltd but was originally an orphanage for guardsmen's children. The statue of St Francis was added in 1961 when the building was a friary.
Thank you Kito Giorno for the following information: The Building was designed by the architect H A Darbishire and was erected in 1865 - the same year as Albert Bridge. It had a connecting door to the Guards Home next door (a building which was demolished in the fifties). The side door - visible in your photograph - was the Matron's private entrance to her own quarters. The Statue of St Francis on the north east corner (commissioned in the sixties by the Friars who once lived here), is by Arthur Fleischmann. |
