Dr. John Fothergill (1785-1858). A respected medical practitioner and Quaker, Dr. Fothergill was a philanthropist who advocated anti-slavery and the abolition of capital punishment. In his home town of Darlington he was a well-known public speaker and pamphleteer on the subject of temperance. At a time when it was unpopular to do so he declined to prescribe alcohol-based medications. In 1835 he founded the Darlington Total Abstinence Society.(

Septimus Hind, a Darlington boy of 17, won two guineas for the design of the monument. Erected on 10 June 1862 by the Society of Friends
