Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe Fosse - geograph.org.uk - 1460371.jpg |
English: The Fosse. Commissioned in 1822 by Captain Pendergrass, RN, and designed by Robert Smirke, The Fosse was completed in 1825. It is named after the Latin word 'fossa' meaning ditch, as the house is built on part of the moat of the former Hereford Castle. The house faces east, overlooking Castle Pool which is all that remains of the original moat. See also 1460372
The 12-roomed house has been Grade II listed since 1973 and has many distinctive features including the windows with octagonal bars, hexagonal chimneys and an interior designed on 8 levels. The balustraded Victorian porch, and the conservatory (hidden by the foliage), are later additions. The red brick section to the left is the coach house and hayloft. |
