Summary

[edit]
Description

The Forth Bridge is a cantilever railway bridge across the Firth of Forth in the east of Scotland, 9 miles (14 km) West of Edinburgh City Centre. This bridge is exclusively for trains but nearby there are two other bridges for road traffic.

It's considered an iconic structure and a symbol of Scotland (having been voted Scotland's greatest man-made wonder in 2016), and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It took 7 years to build and opened for use (rail traffic only) in 1890. 73 workers died during the construction.

There is a story that the painting of the bridge never stops (as soon as it is completed they have to start over again). Until recently that WAS true, but the use of modern paint, specially prepared for the exposed conditions here, means the continual painting is a thing of the past.

The bridge is seen here from the South end, in the town of South Queensferry.
