Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The former Traverse City State Hospital has been undergoing a restoration process in an attempt to re-use and preserve the facility in lieu of destruction. Built in 1885 and officially closed in 1989, the former Traverse City State Hospital had its doors open for just over a century. After its closing in 1989, the facility fell into decay and began to deteriorate rapidly until an architectural firm from Livonia took on the project to restore this massive structure and its surrounding buildings. The Minervini Group of Livonia, Michigan pitched ideas for re-purpose to the citizens of Traverse City, Michigan, and eventually gained enough support to continue on with the project. The Kirkbride structure was fully restored in 2014, and the surrounding structures that have been completed include a winery, assisted living facilities, various restaurants, wedding venues, and more. The former Traverse City State Hospital, now known lovingly as the Village at Grand Traverse Commons, has been one of the largest restoration projects in the Western Hemisphere and is also a testament to people everywhere that it is very possible to save a structure as massive, beautiful, and historically important, from destruction.

This is an image of a place or building that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in the United States of America. Its reference number is 78001499.
