supposed to be the site ofthe present Abbey. Beginning as a tiny churchset up by the heathen Offa in penitence forthe murder of Ethelbert, the building grew tobe an Abbey which has been destroyed, re-built, ruined, and restored many times—butever on the same spot. SOMEWHAT PARTICULAR. A STORY which is told of the late CharlesJamrach, the naturalist and dealer in wildanimals, who died in England a short timesince, is so well vouched for that it may beaccepted. Mr. Jamrach was married more than once,and the story is to the effect that when a friendcondoled with him on the loss of his secondwife, the naturalist answered, with a heavysigh : Yes, yes ; as you say, she was a good wife.But, he added, as if he felt compelled to speakthe whole truth, she never took kindly to theanimals.
