GARDENING FOR THE MONTH. The work to be done in January dependsgreatly on the st^te of the weather. If frostand snow prevail, the chief thing to be at-tended to is the protection of plants withlitter, dry leaves, cinder ashes, Russia mats,etc. After each fall shake the snow offevergreens, as they are often much harmedby the alternate thawing and freezing of snow-water. Should the weather be favour-able, sow early peas in the beginning of themonth, and on slight hotbeds sow salads,carrots, and kidney beans. Lay edgings infine weather. Mignonette, etc., may be sownin pots, and a few hardy annuals on a warmborder. In houses, cinerarias, primulaSicamellias, etc., will now be in flower. ^ Ut Month.) A man of courage never wants weapons. (3 J Days.
