biggest surprises of my life was when I firstcame to AVisconsin from my old home in Xew Jersey and saw farmersof fifty or more years of age walking doMu the streets of Madisonwith a text book under their arms, studying agricidture. This varietyof farmer was totally unknown to me, and was not existent in therange bounded bj^ the State of Xew Jersey. Through my years of A Decennial Record 90 living here it has l)een very evident to nie wliy the Wisconsin farmeris able to make his farm pay while my old farmer friends in XewJersey are still paying for the mortgage on their farms. I think the Forest Prodncts Laboratory is particularly fortunatein being identified with such an institution as the University of Wis-consin, because it furnishes an inspiring example of not only how togain knowledge, but, of what is of equally great importance, how toapply that knowledge. It gives me great pleasure to present to you the man who standsat the head of this great seat of learning—President Birge.

We meet to celebratethe completion of the first ten years of the life of an institution whichwas established by the government of the United States in coopera-tion with the State and the University of Wisconsin.
