Whathe seemed really to value, however, were somemanuscript copies of Dante, of which he showedus two: one a folio or parchment beautifullywritten in German text, the letters as clear andaccurately cut as printed type; the other a smallvolume, fit, as Mr. Kirkup said, to be carried ina capacious mediaeval sleeve. This also was onvellum and as elegantly executed as the largerone ; but the larger had beautiful illuminations,the vermilion and gold of which looked asbrilliant now as they did five centuries ago. Dante has held frequent communications withMr. Kirkup through a medium, the poet beingdescribed by a medium as wearing the samedress seen in the youthful portrait, but as bear-ing more resemblance to the cast taken from thedead face than to the picture from his youthfulone. * There was a very good picture of Savonarolain one of the rooms, and many other portraits,paintings, and drawings, some of them ancient,and some of them the work of Mr. Kirkup him-self. He has the torn fragment of an exquisitedrawing of a nude figure by Rubens, and aportfolio of other curious drawings. Hawthorne and Mr. Landor never met.
