Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Entrance to Brough Haven, Brough, East Riding of Yorkshire, England.
The photograph was taken at low tide.

Just north of the village of Brough are Roman remains of the settlement known as Petuaria, which marked the northern end of a ferry crossing of the Humber estuary. So this haven was in use as a "port" at that time. The route would then run along the foot of the wolds where the chalk upland meets the clay soils of the Humber floodplain. The destination of the route would be what is know the City of York.

West of this point the land becomes flat, (probably impassable in Roman times) and there are no contour lines until you reach the A1 in West Yorkshire.
