s comforted. By what hope ? I know not, for I darednot question it. On the afternoon of the next day I was again sum-moned by his Majesty to witness the burning of that body. It was carried to the cemetery AVatt Sah Kate; andthere men, hired to do such dreadful offices upon the dead, cut off all the flesh and flung it to the hungry dogs thathaunt that monstrous garbage-field of Buddhism. Thebones, and all that remained upon them, were thoroughlyburned; and the ashes, carefully gathered in an earthenpot, were scattered in the little gardens of wretches toopoor to buy mamn^e. All that was left now of the ven-erable devotee was the remembrance of a look. This, said the King, as I turned away sickened andson-owful, is to give ones body to be burned. This iswhat your St. Paul had in his mind, — this custom ofour Buddhist ancestors, this complete ^elf-abnegation inlife and in death, — when he said, Even if I give mybody to be burned, and have not charity (maitri), itprofiteth me nothing.
Text Appearing After Image:
BUDDHIST DOCTRINE, PRIESTS, AND WORSHIP. 203 COMMON MAXIMS OF THE PRIESTS OF SIAM. Glory not in thyself, but rather in thy neighbor. Dijz not the earth, which is the source of life and themother of all. Cause no tree to die. Kill no beast, nor insect, not even the smallest ant or fly. Eat nothing between meals. Regard not singers, dancers, nor players on instruments. Use no perfume but sweetness of thoughts. Keither sit nor sleep in high places. Be lowly in thy heart, that thou mayst be lowly intliy act. Hoard neither silver nor gold. Entertain not thy thoughts with worldly things. Do no work but the work of charity and truth. Give not flowers unto women, but rather prayers. Contract no friendship with the hope of gain. Borrow nothing, but rather deny thy want. Lend not unto usury. Keep neither lance, nor sword, nor any deadly weapon. Judge not thy neighbor. Bake not, nor burn. Wink not. Be not familiar nor contemptuous. Labor not for hire, but for charity. Look not upon women unchast
