e others, like the Witch and Japan Hazels, the Winter-sweet, andthe x^llspice bushes, which, though pretty seen near at hand, do notgive us those definite effects in the garden landscape which it is well toseek if we wish to get out of the fatal jumble of the common shrub-bery. The Escallonias, though very precious in seashore gardens andin the south on warm soils, are apt to go into mourning after hardwinters elsewhere. So many of our island gardens are near the seathat we must not undervalue these shrubs, but a constant sourceof waste is the planting of things not really hardy in districts wherethey perish in hard winters, such as the Arbutus about London and inthe midlands. And, even where things seem hardy, some of them, like Fuchsias, never give the charming effects we get from them inthe west of Ireland, in Wales, and in warm coast gardens, whatevercare we take. Such facts should not discourage, because they onlyemphasise the lesson that the true way in a garden is for each to do

Few of the forms found in France seem to thrivein our gardens, owing to grafting on the Privet, which often, aftera year or twos poor bloom, kills the plant and begins to take careof itself How much evil has been done to English ideas of floweringshrubs by thrusting this Privet everywhere! Lilacs, being hardy inall parts of Britain, deserve our best care, and should always begrouped together in the open sun. They should always be boughtfrom nurserymen who raise them from layers or suckers in the goodold way, and should be, once grown up, always kept a little openand free by simple pruning, s
