Description

On 12 May 1840, a hui was held at Te Papa Mission Station in Tauranga to discuss te Tiriti o Waitangi. During the meeting Thomas Bunbury and Edward Williams tried to secure the signatures of Hori Kingi Tupaea and several other Otumoetai rangatira, who had refused to sign the Tauranga sheet in April.

Williams read the text of te Tiriti and then translated Bunbury’s explanations. However the rangatira were not convinced, arguing they could see no purpose of the Treaty, that land had already been sold, and questioned how the British would deal with inter-iwi fighting. Bunbury blamed their reluctance on Pākehā influence, and hinted at opposition from the Roman Catholics at Otumoetai (who had their own Mission Station), although this has not been proved.

Joseph Nias, the Herald's captain, was impatient to leave, so Bunbury authorised missionary James Stack to produce two more copies of te Tiriti. One was sent inland to Rotorua and Taupō where local tribes Te Arawa and Ngāti Tūwharetoa refused to sign (this copy has since been lost). The second copy was the Bay of Plenty (Fedarb) Sheet: www.flickr.com/photos/archivesnz/12195488783. In his absence, Stack forged the signature of William Hobson, writing ‘William Hobson’ instead of the usual ‘W Hobson’.

The Herald then left for Akaroa on 13 May.

This photograph of The Elms Mission House at Te Papa Mission Station comes from the National Publicity Studios collection. The house itself was built in 1847.
