Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Earl De Grey, Hull This pub once made the local headlines for a rather strange reason. One of the landlords had two macaws named Cha Cha and Ringo who entertained everyone by mimicking the voices of drunken regulars. In 1985 burglars broke in and, presumably alarmed by the noisy parrots, stabbed Cha Cha to death. Apparently poor Ringo was so distraught he never spoke again. I must admit to being baffled by this story: assuming you had good reason to kill a parrot, would you pull out a knife and stab it? In its heyday the Earl De Grey was one of Hull's most notorious pubs and was thought of as an easy place to pick up prostitutes. The building is listed and well maintained but has been boarded up for many years and now stands rather isolated on the north side of the Castle Street stretch of the busy A63(T) dual carriageway. Opened in 1829 as the Junction Dock Tavern, the pub changed its name to the Earl De Grey in honour of a man made High Steward of Hull King's Navy in 1872.
