She wasborn some twenty-four years ago, at Kensington Palace, andis the eldest child and only daughter of His Royal Highnessthe Duke of Teck, and Her Royal Highness Princess Maryof Cambridge, the Queens first cousin, and most popularmember of the English Royal family. Even when quite alittle girl, Princess Polly with the golden hair was muchbeloved by the British public, who had first seen her, a pretty,rosy-cheeked maiden of five, leaning over the balcony ofCambridge House, watching the glittering pageant of theCoronation pass slowly along Piccadilly on its way to West-minster Abbey. The Duchess of Teck and her daughter have their ownsitting-room in the wing once occupied by the Prince ofWales some thirty years ago, when he was first allowed byhis parents the dignity of a bachelor establishment. The business-room and boudoir combined show clearly howPrincess May and her mother spend their time. The list oftheir good and practicable charitable works cannot be given

Princess May has a plainly-furnished sitting-room of herown, close to the little study used by her three brotherswhen they happen to be at home. There she now sits forhours toQfether orazintr listlessly throuofh the laree window atthe beautiful landscape beyond. Since the Duke ofClarences death, the once so gay and joyous Princess hasbecome an entirely different being. She looks as if she wereyet stunned by the blow which she sustained, her sunny smilehas disappeared, and her light-hearted merry laugh is neverheard echoing as of yore through the halls and passages ofthe White Lodge.
