Description
English: The Duelling Stone. A stone urn marks the site where Sir Henry Hobart of Blickling Hall and Oliver Le Neve of Great Witchingham on 20. August 1698 met for a duel on Cawston Heath, about half-way between Witchingham and Blickling. Sir Henry was wounded and died the following day; consequently Oliver Le Neve had to flee the country. Later the monument was moved to the garden of the Woodrow Inn on the B1149 road from Norwich to Corpusty; the inn is meanwhile a petrol filling station > 764618. The Duelling Stone stands on its own small plot of land that has been taken over by the National Trust, which also administers Blickling Hall, the home of Sir Henry Hobart > 764629.
