Description

Height. 20 in, length. 17 1/4 in

Devastated by the assassination of her husband on the night of 13 February 1820, Marie-Caroline, the pregnant duchesse de Berry, became the monarchic symbol of an entire nation. Louis XVIII had no direct heir; his brother the Comte d'Artois would take over, but his eldest son, the duc d'Angoulême, had no children either. All hopes were therefore pinned on the rounded belly of Marie-Caroline, who gave birth on 29 September 1820 to Henri d'Artois, Duc de Bordeaux.

Numerous paintings, objects and references to this birth, such as the miraculous child clocks, were produced by artists in support of the monarchy.

This porcelain plaque depicts the Duchess in mourning with her eldest daughter Louise, looking at the bust of the Duke of Berry created in 1817 by Ruxthiel. It is based on a painting by François-Joseph Kinsoen that was exhibited at the 1822 Salon and was a great success.
