Description

I believe this is a door to the Church of Bet Mercurios, which is described as a "cave church."

What is a cave church? Well, in the context of Lalibela's architecture, I think a cave church occupies a natural recess in the rock.

Unlike other churches in Lalbela, Bet Mercurios was not carved into, and out of, solid rock.

If you're looking for evidence that Bet Mercurios isn't a rock-hewn church, take a look at the wall surrounding the door. Is it sold rock? No - the wall in this photo consists of shaped stone blocks.

That's precisely how one would expect the builders in Lalibela to have closed off the front of a cave to use the interior as a church.
