| Description |
English: The Dog Rock The person who told me about this intriguing carved rock on the slopes of Kinder Scout asked me not to betray its whereabouts (for reasons I don't fully understand) so in deference to his wishes I've deliberately not specified the exact grid reference. The message is fairly easy to decode, despite an error in the first word. The age of the carving is uncertain but it may have been carved by someone making millstones (there are abandoned millstones nearby) or perhaps a mason working on the dam of nearby Kinder Reservoir (built 1911). It's mentioned (with a slightly incorrect decryption of the message) in the book 'Kinder Scout: Portrait of a Mountain'. See 380210 for a close-up of the carving. |
