Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Digges Monument, St Mary's church, Chilham. The monument is by Nicholas stone, 1631. There is also a vault below, with the remains of Sir Dudley Digges and family. There is a column 11 feet high with an urn on top. This is based on Genesis 35,16-20 when Jacob set up a pillar on Rachel's grave. Four graces sit around the pillar, Justice (a sword), Prudence(a mirror), Temperance(wine and water in jugs) and Fortitude(a broken column). Sir Dudley Digges died in 1638. He was a diplomat and politician, and he was appointed Commissioner for Virginia Tobacco. One of his sons became Governor of Virginia. He married Lady Mary Kempe - they had 8 sons and 3 daughters, 2 sons are also in the vault.
