The fine and unusual vertical effect obtained by this treatment is further augmented by the dominant and thoroughly masculine pylons atthe comers of the building. Their broad surfaces of stone are unadorned, brokenonly by single windows, and surmounted by pyramidal tops. The architect wassignally successful in gaining an effect of massiveness and solidity without sacrificeing the light so utterly necessary to the occupants. The decorative phsises of the exterior are three in number. The broad para^pet of stone which encircles the roof bears, on the Fort Street and LafayetteBoulevard facades, inscriptions in raised stone letters of singularly attractive form.In tribute to the fathers of the printing craft, the fluted stone spandrels below thethird story windows carry carved ornaments, heraldic shields and in some casessimple square blocks on all of which are graven the colophons, or printers marks,of
