Besides, theseopen operations make unsightly scars onthe face. (Fig. 4.) To my mind wiresand plates are only indicated in easeswith few or no teeth for the attachmentof splints, where the element of infec- tion is therefore not so prone to enter, and where accurate approximation of thefragments is not essential. It has remained for the dental profes-sion to devise the most efficient methods of treatment of fractures of the jaws,by utilizing the teeth for fixation of thefragments in absolutely accurate posi-tion. 1 will give a brief description onlyof some of the commoner forms of inter-dental splints. THE HAMMOND SPLINT. The Hammond splint consists of aheavy piece of wire bent to fit the buccal

This splint is in-adequate for fractures with much ten-dency to displacement, and its applica-tion is therefore limited. THE GUXXIXG SPLIXT. The Gunning splint, probably themost commonly employed in this coun-try at the present time, is made ofvulcanite, and is attached to the teethof both upper and lower jaws. The jawsare held apart, thus allowing a spaceto be made in the splint for the passageof liquid food. This splint can be usedwith good results in cases where thereare teeth on both sides of the fracture, but is unsuited to cases in which thefracture is in the ramus, or where thereare no teeth in the posterior fragment. The upper and lower teeth being heldapart by this type of splint, there is atendency for the center of motion inseparating the jaws to be at the seat offracture, if the latter is posterior to theteeth, causing a
