was not sufficient, but that we must havea piece which would both rise and fall,lie started to work to make such a piece,making first a solid gold plate to re-store the hard palate, which is a simplematter, and which has been done by hun-dreds of men before. He then attached DEXTAL SOCIETY OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK. 101 to that gold plate, by means of twogold screw posts, a tongue of gold(Fig. 2) fitting in the slot of the goldplate caused by the form of the cleft,the heads of the screw posts projectinginto the nasal cavity, where they do noharm and cause no inconvenience. Thisgold tongue and the soft piece areshown in Fig. 3. unvulcanized rubber into shape as nearlyas possible, placing it upon the tongueand putting in the mouth, and tryingto place it so that the patient couldtalk and retain the appliance without itsgagging him or touching the back ofhis throat. The thick part of the softpiece was made of two thicknesses ofpalate rubber; before vucanizirifr, and Fig. 4.

The soft piece is made of palate rub-ber; we have the dies, and new piecescan be vulcanized and attached to thegold tongue without any inconvenienceto the patient. We have also two of thegold tongues with the soft attachment,so that they can be changed frequently,or sterilized from time to time, and inthat way they last longer than if wehad but the one piece. This soft piece was made by insert-ing the tongue of gold in its proper placeon the gold plate, and then molding the after vulcanizing, it was found that itworked perfectly. The plate with this attachment wasplaced in the mouth of the patient,giving perfectly satisfactory results.(Fig. 4.) The patient had already hadsome twenty-odd plates of differentkinds made by different dentists in theUnited States, the most successful ofwhich was made by Dr. Gritman of theUniversity of Pennsylvania.
