the gum, and it is the anterior portion ofthis band which is objectionable, causingrecession of the gum, etc. The principalfeature of my method is a notching me-sio-distally of the anterior face of theroot about half way anteriorly to the root-canal opening. (Fig. 1.) The root is first prepared in the same way as for the ordinary Richmond crown,and then the notch is cut. A piece of24-karat gold about iSo. 32 gage isthen soldered to a platinum-iridium post,placed on the root, and burnished firstto the notched surface. (Fig. 2.) It is then removed and that portion stiffenedwith solder. The. portion covering theposterior surface of the root is then splitso as to allow the surplus gold to beturned up and burnished, thus formingthe band. (Fig. 3.) After the cap hasbeen thoroughly burnished to the root,it is removed and invested in a little

By this method all the advantages ofa full-banded crown are available, andthe disadvantage of gold showing abovethe porcelain on the anterior portion ofthe root is obviated. The operator can thus form a cap which absolutely fits theface of the root and to which a facingcan be attached as in the ordinary Rich-mond crown. The notch across the faceof the root may be cut very easily with asharp inverted-cone bur. The cap maybe made of platinum and the rest of thecrown completed with porcelain in theusual way.
