Cunninghame Grahame (1852-1936), after being educated at Harrow School, spent his early years in South America and Europe. On returning permanently to Britain he campaigned for Scottish home rule. Although nominally a Liberal, he was in effect the first-ever socialist member of the UK Parliament He was also a founder, and first president, of the Scottish Labour Party, a founder of the National Party of Scotland in 1928; and the first president of the Scottish National Party in 1934. His memorial is now in Gartmore, a village lying to the west of the Carse of Stirling. |
