Industry and Com-Factories. merce of all Cuban industries,and industrial engineers arevisiting them to learn something of theirequipment, output, methods and profits. Thefirst inspection was of Diez and Planiel tilefactory, near Havana. This plants weeklyoutput is 100,000 tiles, and it has a capacityfor a larger production. The factory isprovided with the best modern machineryand equipment. The product, in the opin-ion of the department, is not inferior to thebest in the market. Srs. Soles & Bulnes shoe factory, inCerro, was next visited, where up-wards of 100 workmen are employed.The factory is run by hydraulic power, andhas all necessary mechanical appliances. Theweekly output is 150 dozen pair of shoes, ofa variety of models. The number of teachers approvedfor this service has not been sufficient, theexaminations requiring 75 out of 100 pointsto secure appointment. As a consequencethe teaching of the English language hasbeen far from efficient. Five schools per day to one teacherproved too much and neglect followed.Lack of enthusiam among the teachers andpublic was also strongly in evidence, es-pecially in the time of Estrada Palma.
