A good many of the people areemployed in the sawmills of the CanadaLand & P^ruit Company. From the saw-mills a long tramway leads to the LosIndios river, where the lumber is loadedon schooners and shipped to Cuba, whereit finds a good, readv market. The bestpine lumber brings from $20 to $30 peri.coo feet; red Spanish cedar and ma-hogany un to $150 and $200 per i.ocofeet in Havana. There are large tractsof land under cultivation with citrusfruit and there are fine vegetable gar-dens. .\ company store and a roominghouse with up-to-date modern improve-ments afford comfort to newcomers andvisitors. Theland south of the station is largely savan-na, somewhat despised by the Cubans,who laughed at the idea of the Ameri-cans attempting to raise anything insuch poor soil.
