p inake very satisfactory trees and it is forthe most part on these that the best reputation of the Florida oranges has beenmade. The group is represented by such varieties as Boones Early, Early Oblong,Homosassa, Madam Vinous, Magnum Bonum, Nonpareil and Parson Brown. II. Mediterranean Oranges. Most of the varieties which may be placed in thisgroup have been imported into America from the southern portions of Europe, borderino-on, and the islands in, the Mediterranean sea. Some have originated in America!They are for the most part of much more recent introduction than the Spanish orano-es.The trees of this group are compact growers, almost thornless, with abundance ofsmall, closely set leaves. The fruit is very juicy, rich and of the highest quality, withfew seeds. The types of this group are Jaffa, ^lajorca, Maltese Oval, though othervarieties, not conforming closely to the types, such as Pineapple, Centennial and HartsLate, are best included here. These varieties ven^ closely resemble those of the Mediter-ranean type and came originally from the same sources and regions. The trees aresimilar in growth and foliage. The main difference is that the pulp of the fruit, whenfull ripe, becomes dark blood red in color. Long before this stage is reached, however,they are fit for eating, and can be marketed. The qualitj- of the oranges of this groupis unsurpassed and the fruit generally contains very few seeds.
