MANUFACTURING WHITE SUGAR AT THEMILL The equipment of sugar factories for thedirect manufacture of white sugar from thecane is a chemical problem which is l)eingmuch discussed at present. Recent advancesin the study of clarification have now madeit possible to manufacture very fine gradesof white sugar directly from the juice of thecane. The production of a white market-able sugar which can be stored for any periodof time without loss offers a most satisfactorysolution to the problem of deterioration, andthus enables the producer to hold his productfor the most favorable time of selling. Inconnection with white sugar the problems ofclarification are exceedingly important.Among the new clarifying processes whichare being studied should be mentionedvarious hyposulphite preparations and in-fusorial earth. New decolorising agents ofhigh carbon content, such as Norit and Epon- ite are also being investigated both as to theiruse in refining and in making wh
