PACIFIC COAST TIMBER FOR CUBA A contract has been closed by a merchantin Habana for the importation from the Stateof Washington of about 750,000 feet ofwestern spruce timber. This undoubtedlywill be the first consignment of Pacific coasttimber to Habana by way of the PanamaCtoal. It will imquestionablyalso be the fore-runner of an extensive trade in that line, in-asmuch as a great many of the lumbermen ofHabana have been making inquiries concern-ing the importation of west coast timber andlumber. The only thing in the present in-stance which is unfavorable is the high-freightcharges which obtain.—Consul General JamesL. Rogers, Havana. UNITED CANDLE FACTORY A corporation has been formed under thename of Fabricas Unidad de Velas (UnitedCandle Factory), and is now operating inHavana with offices at 191 Calzada delMonte. OUR HOLD ON CUBAN TRADE Cubas trade has naturally suffered from the war. Therewere causes in operation, however, before the war broke out, which has impaired the purchasing power of the well-to-do classes, and would probably have reduced importations in any event during the autumn of 1914.These causes were the low prices received for the sugar crops of 1912-13 and 1913-14.
