n Lyra and the dumb-bell nebula inVulpecula; others have a more or less close likeness to disks orwheels seen at all angles. A great many, as is the case with thenebula in Orion, are of such structureless shapes as to defyall attempts at visual reproduction in a drawing. Of late it hasbeen thought that the most predominant form was the spiralone, like a revolving Fourth-of-July pin wheel. Up to the present thousands and tens of thousands ofnebulae have been discovered, and quite a number have beenphotographed. To obtain satisfactory results in this branch ofastronomy, a perfectly clear and moonless sky and the mostmodern and best optical instruments are absolutely essential.Ritcheys pictures taken with the 60-inch Mt. Wilson reflectorhave never yet been surpassed. The 36-inch Crossley reflectorat the Lick Observatory has been devoted almost exclusivelyto this kind of work.
