| Description |
English: The Covenanters' Prison This section of Greyfriars kirkyard, surrounded by a high wall and a gate kept securely locked, is known as the 'Covenanters' Prison'. Following their defeat at the battle of Bothwell Brig on 22/6/1679, around 1,000 covenanters were imprisoned here and fed only a starvation diet for 4 months. Many died, a few escaped and some were tried for treason and executed. In November 1679 257 remaining prisoners were sentenced to be transported to the American colonies but their ship foundered off the Orkneys and only 48 survived. This area now has a well deserved reputation as being haunted! |
