Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe Council Oak in late winter, Coate Water, Swindon - geograph.org.uk - 715361.jpg |
English: The Council Oak in late winter, Coate Water, Swindon. The oak tree was mentioned by the Victorian author Richard Jefferies in a novel entitled 'Bevis, the story of a boy'. Jefferies was a minor writer and never really attained national fame. He is still revered locally and there is an active Richard Jefferies society http://www.treitel.org/Richard/jefferies.html He was born very near Coate Water and his birthplace is now a museum dedicated to his memory. It can be seen here 252496. A memorial exists (shared with the other local writer of note, Alfred Williams). These are views of the memorial at Barbury 304032 and 243639. Both Jefferies and Williams were much taken with Liddington Hill, a few kms to the south which can be seen in these images 487836 and 432552. An art deco diving board can be seen in the background of this image. This is an image of it 252475. |
