Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Corn Exchange, Leith. Originally built in 1861 as a marketing hall and the centre of the grain trade, it has since served as the headquarters of the Lighthouse Board, a depot for a scaffolding company, a venue for tall ships celebrations and, for several decades, a public house. In the early 1990s it was unused but has been resurrected and is now an art gallery. I have long been delighted by the finely carved frieze above the windows, which seems to be a celebration of the port of Leith and its trade, with scenes of grain production 542027, grain and grape harvest - the Auld Alliance and trade with France, especially Bordeaux 542030, the wool trade 542032, and general maritime trade 542034. I have, however, so far been unsuccessful in find any information about the frieze.
