| Description | Built prior to 100 AD, during the early Roman period, this was the main commercial center of the ancient city of Ephesus during the Roman and Byzantine period, a bustling market place surrounded by shops and warehouses, and was doubled in size in the 300s AD, during the late Roman period, as the city’s wealth and economic prosperity increased. The agora was abandoned, along with the surrounding city after the harbor silted up, leading to an exodus of the population and the economic activity that once sustained the city. The agora was excavated in the early 20th Century. The ruins of the ancient city of Ephesus were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015. |
