nd give de-scriptions of the one great inclusive scene or groupof scenes which may be said to express the beauty, the sublimity, the wonder of the lakes of theColumbia River. And this one typical lake, the all-inclusive, is Chelan, Beautiful Water. True to our purpose of following the River fromsource to sea, we turn back now from Spokane inorder to go from Kettle Falls to Chelan by boat. There are no regular steamboats running from KettleFalls to Brewster at the mouth of the Okanogan, butfrom the last named point to Wenatchee the steam-boat is the regular and indeed only means of publictravel. Throughout the entire course of two hundredmiles from Kettle Falls to Wenatchee the river iswild and swift. Yet steamers have traversed almostthe entire distance, and Government engineers are nowengaged in surveys looking to improvements such aswill make steamboat traffic easy and profitable. Wepass numberless points of interest, but Chelan, Che-lan, Beautiful Water, Beautiful Water, is our goal.

This transparent torrent isthe outlet of the lake. It is only four miles longand descends three hundred and eighty feet in thatdistance. It furnishes one hundred and twenty-fivethousand horse-power at low water. The canon, rivenand tortured, through which it descends, is a fittingapproach to the lake, unique Chelan. For havingtraversed the four miles, we find the lake out-stretched before us. At this first view the lake has that look of a sereneobliviousness to the flight of passing centuries, thatimpressure of eternity, that belongs to all great w
