Bickering over the future of Aberdeen Pavilion and the Horticulture Building has nudged the century-old Coliseum Building off the radar at Lansdowne Park. In fact, the building was knocked down as part of the planned redevelopment of the park by the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group. The 28,000-sq.-ft. Coliseum dates back to 1903, when it opened as a "fat stock and poultry show" facility. According to the Lansdowne heritage study commissioned by the city and OSEG, the roof collapsed in 1904 and 1905 because of heavy snow loads. It was expanded in 1906 and the main section was used as an auditorium and show ring. In 1914 the building's boiler exploded during the winter fair, killing three men, injuring 20 others and hurting horses and poultry. According to the research, there were extensive additions in 1926 and the World's Poultry Congress was held there the next year. A livestock pavilion was attached to the Coliseum Building in 1950. The building has hosted several big political events over the decades, including the founding convention of the federal NDP in 1961. |
