The Clipper Ship Lightning 1854 (1769 Tons Register). Messrs James Baines and Co Owners |
Description |
English: The Clipper Ship Lightning 1769 Tons Register. Messrs James Baines & Co Owners Print. Coloured lithograph of the three-masted clipper, Lightning (1854). The image shows the starboard side of the ship with the main course sail and all three topgallant sails reefed. She is tacking against a stiff wind from port (indicated by the alignment of the sails and the direction of the flag) in fast-running waves against a background of blue sky and light cloud. The house flag of the Black Ball Line (a black disc on a red background) flies from the top of the main mast and figures are shown on the foredeck possibly hauling in the jib or staysail. A ship's longboat can be seen stowed towards the stern. |
