Description Original caption: "
...was freezing as it fell. Scum ice is thin, but its edges are sharp and a Canoe is a very frail craft. But a move was imperative as grub was none too plentiful; so we hurriedly loaded the Canoe & paddled downstream as fast as we could, trusting and hoping that the weather would not turn really cold and change that scum ice into a solid mass.

The wind now helped us and at last on rounding a bend, we saw an old Hudsons Bay Post, situated right at the head of the Rapids above, and as we believed, close to the terrible “chutes”.
